Gesigneerd: Bachelard. H. 56 cm. B. 67 cm. This sculptural clock is entitled 'L'Etude et la Philosophie' or 'Les Arts et les Sciences'. The model for the clock derives from a drawing in a catalogue produced by François Rémond circa 1785. This clock design was hugely popular in the lateb18th century.This clock follows closely the drawing with an identical displayed eagle, figures, plaque centering the figures and frieze with a mask and winged putti. Signed on the white enamel dial Gerard à Ste Menehould. The bronze captures classical Louis XVI mythological symbols such as ram, lion and the Golden Fleece, vase, pineapple finials. A very fine Louis XVI portico marble
clock with Pallas Athena, gilt bronze and white mantle, Herman à
Paris. France ca. 1780. White marble clock
of eight day duration, signed on the white enamel dial Herman à
Paris. The dial with black Arabic numerals for the hours and minutes and
inner red Arabic numerals for the 31 days of the month, with a fine pair
of gilt brass hands, blued steel pointer for the day date indication.
The movement with anchor escapement, silk thread suspension, striking
on the hour and half hour on a single bell, with count wheel, with free
swinging sunburst Medusa head pendulum.On the double rectangular marble
plinth, raises two marble columns, in the middle of the columns stand
above the clock drum the gilt bronze goddess Pallas Athena with attributes.
The fluted white marble columns, each mounted by a lion head mask with
ring in its mouth, coat of arms and more gilt bronze ornaments. All elements
contribute to the glorification of the goddess Athena, goddess of wisdom,
the science, the city, agriculture and war. Paris, date circa 1780. H.

Mechaniek in toog: Muzikale strijd tussen Apollo en Marsyas, koning Midas met de ezelsoren die een winnaar moet aanwijzen, terwijl een man in toga de maat slaat. De schildering is met grote waarschijnlijkheid van de hand van J.Strumpff. |
